Claudette Marie Mouton, 64, a native of Kaplan, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 21, at her home in Santa Cruz, California, after a brief battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends.

She was a 1966 graduate of Kaplan High School, going on to LSU, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education, and a masters degree in French. She taught high school mathematics in both Lafayette Parish and Calcasieu Parish. She lived in both Louisiana and California, before settling in Santa Cruz, where she was happiest.

She is survived by her partner, Kristin Masters and their beautiful daughter, Isabel; as well as Kenji Maeda of Soquel, California, whom she raised; Kenji’s wife, Kelli Desormeaux Maeda; and their two daughters, Lunden and Remi.

She is also survived by a sister, Darnelle Mouton McIntosh of Valley Springs, Arkansas and her husband Paul McIntosh; two brothers, Glenn Mouton of Lafayette, and Steven Mouton and his wife Clair Guillot Mouton of Harahan, Louisiana; as well as two nieces, two nephews, and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Claude Mouton, and her mother “Vergie” Adams Mouton, both of Kaplan.

A private memorial service was conducted at a home in the Santa Cruz area on July 3.

Her ashes will be cherished by the family.
