The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) Annual Convention was held last Wednesday, January 25 through Friday, January 27 in Baton Rouge at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The Louisiana High School Athletic Directors Association (LHSADA) and the LHSAA/UCA-NCA Cheerleading Coaches’ Clinic were also hosted at the conference. All of the events were productive and successful.

On Wednesday, conference attendees enjoyed various exhibits and the annual Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony. The 2012 Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame Inductees included Claudia Blanchard, a coach from Port Barre; Will Clark, a competitor from Jesuit; James Simmons, an administrator from Lafayette Parish; Edward J. “Skeets” Tuohy, former coach from Isidore Newman; and Otis Washington, a coach from St. Augustine.

The LHSAA also recognized various companies, organizations and individuals for their participation and service towards helping high school athletes throughout the state. The 2011-2012 Partnership Recognition Awards went to State Farm and its Louisiana agents, Southern Quality Ford Dealers, Coca-Cola Bottlers of Louisiana, Nike Team Sports, Baden Sports, Inc., JC Fodale Energy Services, Exxon Mobil, Talk’n Tshirts, Musemeche Photography, Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine, the United States Marine Corps and Cox Sports Television. The Special Recognition awards went to Louisiana Healthcare Connections, New Orleans’ Football Officials’ Association and Wendy’s. Sam Pernici and Dr. Gregory Stewart were honored with this year’s Distinguished Service awards, and Claire Clark won the Golden Torch Award. Ken Trahan was awarded the Prep Journalism Award, and Super Sports awards went to John Boyer and Erin Cofiell.

Thursday was filled with educational workshops and clinics for all attendees, and the Coca-Cola Convention Luncheon was held where former LSU Men’s Basketball Coach Dale Brown spoke to participants on how to find success and happiness. Brown discussed life as a coach and the important role coaches play in their players’ lives. Besides the catfish lunch sponsored by Coke Limited, conference goers attended round table discussions and sessions regarding state laws, injuries, sportsmanship and various other topics pertinent to Louisiana high school athletics. A major convention highlight was the decision to allow LHSAA member schools to play one class up beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.

Each year, the LHSAA convention is an educational experience for principals, coaches and athletic directors as well as a breeding ground for beneficial ideas to surface that can continuously improve the state of high school athletics in Louisiana. This year’s convention was one of the most productive events in the association’s history. As we look forward to implementing the new ideas that came from this event, it is my hope that our schools and student-athletes will have even stronger athletic programs, more memorable seasons and added talented competitors.
