Kaitlin LaBauve, a 2013 graduate of Erath High School, has been chosen as the 2013 recipient of “The Anthony Fontana, Sr. - Ronney D. Mayard Memorial Music Scholarship”. As a five-year member of the EHS Bobcat Band, Kaitlin consistently was given the “Most Outstanding Musician Award” for her grade level. Her excellence in musicianship was exemplified by her selection to be in the Vermilion Parish Honor Band, District Wind Ensemble, Parish Honor Jazz Band and the LBDA All-State Honor Band. In addition to her acclaim in Louisiana, she also was chosen as a member of the All-South Band, the National Honors Ensemble in Washington D.C. and to play an Honors Performance in New York City at Carnegie Hall.

From the time she watched her brother perform with the band when he was in high school, Kaitlin has aspired to develop her abundant musical talent. She enjoys playing trumpet, her major instrument, writing and listening to music and is also working for proficiency on guitar, drums, bass and saxophone.

Her instructor, inspiration and “superhero” was the late Mike Trahan, local trumpeter and recipient of the 2006 Fontana-Mayard Scholarship, and she dedicates her performance and achievements to Mike. She states that she has made “life-long friends from all over the country, traveled to places that most people will never visit and made memories that most people will never make,” all because she joined the EHS band. She declares, “Music, like Mike, is my superhero.”

Kaitlin plans to attend LSU in Baton Rouge and major in music education. She aspires to become a professional musician and a band/music teacher.
