LAFAYETTE - Cité des Arts will be holding auditions for She Stoops to Conquer, the delightful 18th century British comedy about a courtship’s confusion, jolly pranks, and the battle of the sexes, all of which take place in one night’s time.

Auditions are July 20 (12 noon-3pm) and July 23 (6:30-8:30pm) at Cité des Arts, 109 Vine St, Lafayette, LA 70501. Rehearsals begin July 30 at Cité des Arts.

For one of the most famous of British Comedies, actors should come prepared to cold read dialogue (although they might want to check out a copy from the library to acquaint themselves with this rowdy comedy). Prepared monologues between 50 and 100 words are also accepted. This play calls for tight comedic timing, elasticity of movement, clear voice and only the slightest of British accents.

Looking for: Three women ages 18-30; Two sophisticated gentlemen ages 18-30; Six robust and silly male characters ages 18-65 (requirement: be physically well for these roles).

She Stoops to Conquer, the most renowned of parlor comedies for over 230 years, has been the preferred classic comedy of numerous great actors, including Helen Mirren, Judy Dench, and Nathan Lane.

Cité des Arts is pleased to present producer and director Lauren Greene Whyte’s version for its top-notch historic and engagingly original costume designs. While Whyte’s costumes riveted theatre goers in last summer’s 17th century play, The Rehearsal, it became a sensation based on its rare performance—Lafayette’s production was only the second ever performed in the United States. Whyte will be producing and directing unique classics annually with Cité des Arts.
